It is becoming a reality, thanks to the solidarity initiative promoted by the family and friends of Albert Marco and a donation from the company Novartis.
With the involvement of Andrea, José Manuel, Núria and Montse, volunteers from the Kālida Sant Pau center, we have recently launched the “Albert de Hort”. In addition, they have designed a horticulture workshop, which is part of the social support section of the first Kālida Center, aimed at people with cancer at any stage of the disease. Together they are giving life to this small garden plot.
First they have prepared the land and installed the irrigation system, later they have been planting winter season species - lettuce, chard, onions, beans, endives… - as well as "protective" plants to control possible pests - marigolds , tagetes, tanarida or artemisia absenthis, among others.
"L'Hort de l'Albert" is a project that we planned to start last spring, but the Covid-19 pandemic did not allow it. From Kālida we bet on social horticulture for the existing evidence regarding the benefits it has in the recovery and integration of people with cancer, for example:
Fights sedentary lifestyle, reduces blood pressure and increases motor skills.
It improves mood, increases self-esteem and decreases stress and anxiety.
It increases social participation and improves autonomy.
Stimulates memory and the ability to pay attention and learn a routine.
The use of horticulture as a therapy and as an educational and socializing instrument has, for more than half a century, been widely established and recognized in countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Canada, the United States, etc.
The Social Horticulture Workshop is currently held two Fridays a month, from 10:30 to 12:30. People with cancer can participate in any phase of the disease. To sign up, approach Kālida or email us at kalida.santpau@www.fundaciokalida.org
