The Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE) is a joint research centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) founded in 2008. The IBE's research focuses on the processes and mechanisms that generate biodiversity, and among the topics studied there are genetic and molecular evolution, population biology, the biology of complex systems and the recovery of ancient DNA. The IBE is the only research centre in Catalonia and the rest of Spain that is dedicated entirely to evolutionary biology, and is a benchmark in this field in southern Europe. The IBE employs around one hundred and thirty people, distributed in the neighbouring buildings of the Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) and the Mediterranean Centre for Scientific Research (CMIMA).
