The demolition of the building located at Carrer de la Marina, 122, which had been one of the warehouses of the old Casa Gay, is being completed. This fact will allow the Eixample to gain a new place to stay and a refuge for biodiversity, right next to the Marina bridge.
During the tasks prior to the demolition of the building in the Fort Pienc neighborhood, a great abundance of pre-existing vegetation was detected, among which nine pines, a ficus and a red-leaved plum tree were identified. The District and Parks and Gardens are now working to create a biodiversity refuge, managed by the municipal institute and closed to the public, which will help preserve the existing natural heritage and promote the biodiversity of the environment.
In addition to the shelter, the lot will allow the development of another part where there will be a small living area with new lighting, furniture and some trees. Actions will also be carried out on the deteriorated pre-existing elements, such as the railing that saves the difference in level with the lower part of the park.
Finally, and at the request of the neighborhood, a mosaic that was on the ground floor of the old building will be recovered and preserved.
Casa Gay, pioneer in the city
The Casa Gay company is considered the oldest in the chair rental sector in Barcelona. It was founded in 1860 and began commercial activity with the rental of the famous "La Rambla chairs". But it wouldn't be until 1929, the year of the Barcelona Universal Exhibition, that the company built this second warehouse at Carrer de la Marina, 122, which provided service until the 1980s.
