The Baix Guinardó gardens, of 1.79 Ha, formerly known as the gardens of the Prince of Girona are a green area that is located in the Baix Guinardó district, between Taxdirt, Marina, Lepant and Travessera de Gràcia streets. In the past, these lands were occupied by the cavalry quarters of Girona, or Casernes de Girona, which ceased to have this function in the 1980s.
This garden is presided over by a large central esplanade of sauló surrounded by terraces that save the difference in level that exists between the streets and the central part of the garden. The esplanade has a large lake surrounded by bananas (
Platanus x
hispanica = Platanus hybrida = Platanus acerifolia ) which gives it a characteristic feature. During 2009, part of the site was renovated, equipping it with a center for the elderly, a new bar and improving access to the central area.
Vegetation The outdoor terraces of the green area are dominated by ivory hedges (
Viburnum tinus ), piracant (
Pyracantha angustifolia ) accompanied by trees such as melia (
Melia azedarach ). The margins of the sauló esplanade are populated by pine trees (
Pinus pinea ) that provide shade to the space. In order to add color to the garden, there are groups of bougainvillea (
Bougainvillea sp.), Blue jasmine (
Plumbago auriculata ) and oleander (
Nerium oleander ).
Canary palm trees (Phoenix canariensis ) and palm
trees (Chamaerops humilis ) add a touch of variety to the esplanade. The banana also plays a prominent role in the floral composition of the garden and is found around the lake and on the islets in the middle of it.
Orchard of the Casal de Gent Gran del Baix Guinardó. The Casal has an orchard space in the Baix Guinardó Gardens, with a few plots for the elderly managed by the Casal itself.
